Restaurant Chain Welcomes New Year with New Restaurant Prototype

SHARON, Pa. – January 24, 2011 – Quaker Steak & Lube®, the motorsports-themed casual-dining family restaurant best known for its chicken wings and 25 specialty sauces and flavors that it will roll out a new 7,700-square-foot prototype restaurant building in 2011. Quaker Steak & Lube®’s veteran design team led by foodservice consultant Michael Bradnan, FCSI, CSI, architect David Pontia, AIA and Kathy Diamond Design Associates have reduced the investment cost associated with the total project by nearly $1M.

The streamlined 2011 prototype building maintains all the character and atmosphere that customers expect in a Quaker Steak & Lube® restaurant, all-the-while delivering a great experience in a compact powerhouse building.

“The new design is a huge part of our company’s expansion plans and represents an attractive investment for existing and potential franchisees. With all of our recent development deals, customers can expect to see the new restaurants arrive in early 2011,” said John Longstreet, president and chief executive officer of Quaker Steak & Lube®. “The 7,700-square-foot prototype restaurant is going to play an integral role in our brand’s expansion throughout the next couple years.”

The new restaurants will accommodate indoor and outdoor patio seating for more than 350 guests and will include themed rooms such as Thunder Alley, the Vette Room and two bars called Handle Bar and Brickyard. Serving as an outside bar in the summer, Brickyard Bar features extra large garage doors that open and provide patio seating. Also featured within the new prototype restaurant will be the Pick-Up Wing-Go Window, where guests can call-in and pick up selected menu items without delay.

“Customers can expect the same quality of food and experience from the prototype facility that all Quaker Steak & Lube® restaurants have to offer,” said Jamie Cecil, vice president of franchise sales and development. “We are excited to kickoff the New Year with such an innovative design that fits on two-acres of land and accommodates 160 cars.”

The 2011 prototype Quaker Steak & Lube® building incorporates tried and true construction methods for simplicity, ease and speed of erection, while integrating technology for operational savings. To assist in developing a green building, items that have been incorporated include ENERGY STAR high efficiency kitchen equipment, systemized units for the HVAC equipment and modified lighting to be more economical to install and operate. A master control panel (CPI panel) is a standard feature which will control the building’s lighting, heating and cooling levels which are programmed to perform throughout the day and night in each area, producing long term savings by minimizing operational costs. This system can also be monitored and modified from offsite locations. HVAC and electrical system sizes were reduced approximately 25 percent each, while maintaining performance. Hood designs were also modified which will reduce exhaust by 20 percent.

Quaker Steak & Lube® most recently signed a record breaking 16-restaurant development agreement with Action Companies, a Quaker Steak & Lube® franchisee since 2007, and will begin constructing the first 7,700 square-foot prototype restaurants in the upstate New York and New England marketplace beginning in early summer.

In addition to the major expansion into New York and New England territory, Quaker Steak & Lube® is working on finalizing details for another major development agreement in the Midwest and South.

System-wide, Quaker Steak & Lube® has 40 new restaurants in development or on the drawing board for the next 24 months.
